About Elliot Jacobs, M.D.
Hello! I’m Elliot Jacobs, M.D., a board-certified New York City plastic surgeon.
But, please just call me Dr. J!
I became interested in gynecomastia, or male breast reduction surgery , back in 1990.
Since then, I’ve performed male breast reduction surgery on 1,450 guys, including teens, along with young adults and more mature men. I’ve even invented special surgical tools for the procedure.
One of the things I’m somewhat widely known for is highly recommending gynecomastia surgery for teens.
In other areas of rejuvenation surgery — like pinning back large ears, (otoplasty) — virtually all experts agree the procedure should be done before the child starts school to prevent the teasing and ridiculing that large ears invariably brings from other children.
Should it be any different for boys who develop female-like breasts at 13 or 14?
The teen years are an incredibly important time for developing a healthy sense of self and self-image. But being the object of constant ridicule, humiliating names and suffering cruel incidents like having a bra hung on your gym locker door can quickly undo a lad’s sound development.
Nonetheless, many physicians advise waiting through the teen years in the hopes the condition will go away.
I see it differently.
